ARTISTS COOPERATIVE OPENS EXHIBIT
An exhibit of 40 photos from Impact Visuals, a cooperative of photographers and graphic artists concerned with contemporary social issues, opens Saturday at the Grandin Theatre Gallery, 1310 Grandin Road S.W. Roanoke. The show is sponsored by the Plowshare Peace Center.
It takes its title, "Collateral Damage," from the term used during the Gulf War to refer to civilian casualties of military attacks.
According to Polly Branch of the peace center, for purposes of the exhibit, "the title applies not only to the victims of bombing Iraq, but also to the ongoing assault on the lives of people in the U.S. The display portrays the lost war on poverty, on drugs, on bigotry and intolerance."
Branch said the exhibit is an effort "to redirect national attention from postwar backslapping to the most pressing task: addressing the needs of the people at home."
"Collateral Damage" will remain at the Grandin through Feb. 27. It can be visited during theater hours.
