NEW VOTER REGISTRAR CHOSEN IN ROANOKE
Shelva Painter has been appointed Roanoke's voter registrar, succeeding Sharon Carrington.Carrington, who had been registrar for 2 1/2 years, resigned this month for health reasons.
Painter has been an assistant registrar for 10 years, said Melba Pirkey, chairman of the city Electoral Board. The three-member board appoints the registrar and oversees elections.
Pirkey said Carrington had done an excellent job since she took over when Audrey Franklin retired in 1989.
Carrington worked for the city for 16 years, including several in the Personnel Management Department before she began working in the registrar's office.
