REBELS SKID AGAIN ON ROAD, LOSING 2-1

Life on the road in the East Coast Hockey League continues to be a bummer for the Roanoke Valley Rebels.

Despite a superb effort by goaltender Mike James, the Rebels went down to their 14th loss in 15 road games Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to the Richmond Renegades.

The loss wasted a strong effort by James, who kept Roanoke Valley (14-25-3) in the game by stopping 35 of 37 shots.

"Give up two goals and you're supposed to win," Rebels coach Roy Sommer said. "We just don't have enough guys who can put the puck in the net right now."

Goaltender Jamie McLennan helped Richmond (23-14-3) to its fifth win in as many games against Roanoke Valley this season.

The Rebels jumped ahead 1-0 on Frank Bialowas' power-play rebound goal 7:45 into the game. Trevor Smith set up the goal with a slap shot from the blue line that caromed off Richmond goalie Jamie McLennan's pads to Bialowas, unchecked in front of the net.

Outplayed in the first 20 minutes, the Renegades went to work in the second period.

Dave Aiken tied the score at 1 at the 5:34 mark when he beat James with a high wrist shot from between the circles. The Renegades went ahead 2-1 six minutes later when Guy Gadowsky squeezed a low wrist shot from the left circle between James' stick and the right post.

\ ICE CHIPS: Help is on the way for the Rebels' offense. High-scoring center Peter Kasowski, out for the past two weeks with a fractured larynx, and forward Chris Lyons, assigned from Salt Lake City of the International Hockey League, will be in the lineup this weekend for home games against the Raleigh IceCaps on Friday and the Toledo Storm on Saturday. . . . Al Novakowski's Rebels debut was short-lived. The big defenseman was sidelined after engaging in a fight with Richmond's Pat Bingham 5:47 into the game. The early diagnosis was strained right knee ligaments. . . . Former Rebel Mike Chighisola was traded Thursday by the Hampton Roads Admirals to Raleigh for Steve Mirabile.
