GARMENT-MAKER GIVING AGENCIES FREE CLOTHING
Social services agencies in Giles, Montgomery and Floyd counties and all Virginia localities to the west of them are being offered free clothing for their clients through a donation from Donkenney Inc.About 48,000 garments - mostly articles of women's clothing with small fabric flaws that prevent them from being sold in stores - are being presented to the Wythe County Social Services Department. From there they go to agencies and clothing closets in 22 Western Virginia localities.
Most of Donkenney's plants are in the region west of Montgomery and Floyd, said Ron Hollingsworth, corporate controller, so that seemed the proper place to make use of the garments. They were moved from Christiansburg to Wytheville this month.
The Alliance Tractor-Trailer Training Center in Wytheville loaded the boxed clothing in two of its trailers and moved it to an industrial shell building belonging to the Joint Industrial Development Authority of Wythe County in Fairview Industrial Park.
Michael Hall, social services director in Wythe County, made arrangements for the movement and storage of the clothing when he was approached by Hollingsworth, and will act as broker in distributing it.
He will be meeting Friday with other directors from the Western Region and get a list of those wanting to pick up some of the boxes.
Hollingsworth said the articles include about 37,000 pants, 7,700 tops, 900 shirts, 150 jackets, 100 turtleneck shirts and assorted dresses and jump suits.
