SEMINAR TO HELP FIRMS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
A seminar on how businesses can comply with the new Americans With Disabilities Act will be held Feb. 19 at the Appalachian Power Co. auditorium on Main Street in Pulaski.The new federal law prohibits discrimination against the disabled in employment, public accommodations, government services, transportation and communications.
The act includes hearing and visual impairment, paraplegia, epilepsy, alcoholism, past drug use and AIDS in its definition of disabling conditions.
The provisions for employers with 25 or more employees becomes effective in July. There is no small-business exception in the law.
The three-hour seminar, sponsored by the Gilmer, Sadler, Ingram, Sutherland & Hutton law firm, will begin at 9 a.m. Deborah Wood Dobbins, who specializes in workers' compensation and employment law, will give the presentation.
