PHILANTHROPIST MARGARET CUTSHALL DIES

Margaret McGuire Cutshall, 97, a benefactor of many Roanoke Valley charitable and educational causes, died Tuesday in a Roanoke nursing home.

She once owned the Viaud School, a private school in Southwest Roanoke, and taught at Jefferson High School.

In 1980, the Virginia Association of Electric Cooperatives named her the Unsung Virginian, a recognition for a person who devotes a lifetime to improving conditions for others but does not seek or receive public recognition. Her contributions were made through her family's McGuire Foundation.

She helped support many young people in school. Among her papers were many letters from former students who thanked her for her support, according to Jean Waldrop, a niece. She was a longtime Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke and at Villamont Presbyterian Church. She also had been a leader at Goodwill Industries.

Her husband, the late R.W. Cutshall, was chairman and co-founder of Reid & Cutshall Inc., a longtime Roanoke furniture store, and a member of Roanoke City Council. Her father, W.E. McGuire, owned the old Farmers Supply Co., now the home of Center in the Square. It was built in the early 1900s.

The funeral will be today at noon at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to RAM House, Goodwill Industries or the Rescue Mission.
