EPA CLEARS $1.2 BILLION HALIFAX POWER PLANT
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved construction of a $1.2 billion coal-fired power plant in Halifax County, ending more than a year of federal review.Sen. John Warner, R-Va., said EPA Administrator William K. Reilly telephoned him Wednesday with news that the EPA had given the green light to the 786-megawatt plant proposed in 1988 by Virginia Power and the Old Dominion Electric Cooperative.
Virginia had issued an air quality permit for the project, but a Charlottesville-based group appealed to the EPA last summer.
The Southern Environmental Law Center, which represents a coalition of environmental and citizens groups, argued that the project would pollute the Shenandoah National Park.
