RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. THOMAS P. O'DELL will begin his ministry at St. John's Episcopal O'Dell Church in downtown Roanoke on Feb. 10. A welcoming reception will follow the 10 a.m. service on his first Sunday, Feb. 16.

O'Dell, 42, a native of Kentucky, is coming from St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church in a Louisville suburb; he has been associate rector there and on the staff since 1987.

Before entering General Theological Seminary in New York, he attended Murray State University and Washington and Lee Law School and practiced law privately and in banking.

He is married to a teacher, Marilyn, and the family also includes Ben, 18, and Andy, 15. The rector's family will move to Roanoke when school is out.

\ ROANOKE AREA MINISTRIES board has elected Deborah Oehlschlaeger, a lawyer active in Christ Lutheran Church, as its new president.

Other new leaders of the ecumenical agency to help the needy are the Rev. James Parke of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic and the Rev. Kenneth Lane of Trinity Lutheran, vice presidents; Bess Rhodes of Melrose Christian (Disciples of Christ), secretary; and Clyde Ware of Windsor Hills United Methodist, treasurer.

The board sets policies for RAM's ministries, which are coordinated by paid staff the Rev. Julie Hollingsworth and Debbie Denison.

\ GRACE COVENANT CHURCH is the new name taken by the Church of the Living Way, which has been established for more than 15 years at 1857 Grandin Road S.W. The Rev. John Ault is pastor of the independently constituted charismatic group.

\ A TRADING CARD SHOW to benefit the ministry of the Rev. Richard Harris as chaplain to jails and a public nursing home is scheduled Feb. 8 in the fellowship hall of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Salem. For the admission price of 50 cents, participants may buy and trade racing, baseball, football and basketball collectors' cards. The show is sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference, which helps support Harris' work.

\ JOANI TABOR, a Roanoke gospel singer, will perform Sunday at 7 p.m. at New Hope Christian Church, 4229 Welcome Valley Road. The program is free.

\ THE REV. ROBERT E. FIELD has marked his 25th anniversary as pastor of Garden City Church of the Nazarene. He was honored at a reception earlier this month.

Field, 55, came to the church from Winchester; he and his wife, Zella, have two daughters living in Nashville, Tenn. During Field's pastorate the church has erected three buildings for education, worship and community activities.
