Hobbyist gardeners forming club in Salem

A back-yard vegetable gardening club will be organized in Salem for Roanoke Valley residents interested in gardening.

An organizational meeting is scheduled Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Salem. Organizing the club is W. Melvin Maxey, a lifelong gardener and graduate of Master Gardening training from the Virginia Tech Extension Service.

At the meeting, Maxey will show a video to help gardeners start their hobby. The group, which probably will meet monthly, is open to beginning and experienced gardeners.
