HOBBYIST GARDENERS FORMING CLUB IN SALEM

Hobbyist gardeners forming club in Salem

A back-yard vegetable gardening club will be organized in Salem for Roanoke Valley residents interested in gardening.

An organizational meeting is scheduled Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Salem. Organizing the club is W. Melvin Maxey, a lifelong gardener and graduate of Master Gardening training from the Virginia Tech Extension Service.

At the meeting, Maxey will show a video to help gardeners start their hobby. The group, which probably will meet monthly, is open to beginning and experienced gardeners.

Green Valley School's book fair starts Tuesday

Green Valley Elementary School will have a book fair Tuesday through Feb. 10 to benefit the school library.

The sale of new paperback books will held according to the following schedule: Tuesday through Feb. 7, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.; Feb. 8, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; Feb. 9, closed; Feb. 10, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

Cave Spring Lions give Braille watches

The Cave Spring Lions Club recently presented Braille watches to six visually impaired Roanoke Valley residents.

Those receiving watches were Tosha Jackson, Hazel Heslop, Harry Angle, Donald Fisher, Pat Collier and Ed Parker.

Fink's Jewelers donated the watches for this annual event.
