GEOLOGY LECTURE AT TECH MUSEUM

The Virginia Museum of National History at Virginia Tech will sponsor a lecture on "The Geology of Karst Development" Feb. 13, 7:30-8:30 p.m.

On Feb. 19, a panel on "Local Karst Issues and How They Relate to Water Resources" will be held at the museum, 7:30-9 p.m.

Karst is limestone geological formations with sinkholes, ravines and underground streams. During the lecture, William Henika, Virginia Division of Mineral Resources geologist, will talk about the structure and potential hazards of karst systems, giving local examples.

The panel is co-sponsored by the Montgomery County League of Women Voters. David Hirshman, Tech's urban affairs and planning department research associate, will give a brief introduction to karst.

Panel members are Joe Draper, Draper Aden consulting engineer and county Planning Commission member; Ernst Kastning, Radford University geology professor; James Moore, Montgomery County Board of Supervisors member; and Jean Simonds of Tech's Pesticide Research Lab and a member of the Virginia Cave Board.

The lecture and the panel discussion are free. The museum is at 428 N. Main St. Call 231-3001 for more information.
