FORMER BUREAU CHIEF NAMED GALAX PUBLISHER

Chuck Burress, who served as bureau chief and later editor at the New River Valley bureau of the Roanoke Times & World-News before moving to Galax, has been named publisher of The Gazette here.

He has been general manager since late 1989 of the Galax newspaper, which is published three times a week.

Burress, 38, became a reporter for the Roanoke Times in 1977. He opened a bureau in Martinsville in 1978, became New River Valley bureau chief in 1979, and editor of its zoned news section in 1984.

He is a 1977 graduate of Virginia Tech.
