COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME CLOSES INDEFINITELY
The College Football Hall of Fame has been closed to the public indefinitely because of poor attendance. The hall, located about 20 miles northeast of Cincinnati, normally is open to the public on weekends during the winter. It usually reverts to regular weekday hours in the spring.
"We've closed the hall down anyway during the week. Why keep it open [for the weekend]?" Bob Casciola, executive director of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, said in a telephone interview Friday.
"We regret that we had to close the hall, but we felt it was only appropriate," he said.
Casciola said no reopening date is set. The hall will continue to play host to special events.
The hall went to weekend-only hours for the winter of 1984-85, citing the downturn of visitors after Labor Day.
The foundation is accepting offers to move the hall, which opened adjacent to the Kings Island amusement park in 1978. Managers initially expected about 300,000 visitors a year, but attendance has been about one-tenth of that.
Casciola said about a dozen places have expressed an interest. Foundation officials hope to have a short list of sites this spring and choose a new site by June.
