RENTER CUT, JAILED IN STRUGGLE WITH LANDLADY

A Christiansburg man wound up in jail Friday, wounded in the rear with his own knife and charged with trying to kill his landlady with her gun.

Paul Randall Hechtman, 40, was charged with attempted murder, breaking and entering and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He was in the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Christiansburg police Lt. Doug Marrs said Hechtman was renting a room from Mary Alice Wiley, 69, in the 700 block of Lester Street.

Hechtman is accused of forcing his way into Wiley's bedroom shortly before 1 a.m. Friday. Marrs said he placed his knife on the bed and forced Wiley to the floor.

The woman grabbed the knife and stabbed Hechtman in the right buttock, Marrs said. Hechtman then pulled a handgun from a drawer in Wiley's room and fired twice. Wiley was not hit.

Hechtman was treated at Montgomery Regional Hospital, then taken to jail, Marrs said.

A Feb. 18 hearing is scheduled in Montgomery County General District Court.
