GALAX UPSETS FLOYD BEHIND SPELLS

Forward Jeff Spells scored 32 points and grabbed 21 rebounds Friday night as Galax snapped Floyd County's 12-game winning streak 80-69, creating a tie for first place in the Mountain Empire District.

It was the eighth victory in the past nine boys' basketball games for Galax, which raced to a 21-9 first-quarter lead but saw its lead dwindle to one point in the third and fourth quarters.

After Floyd had cut the deficit to one with 3:30 remaining, Jason Ross made a 3-pointer to give the Maroon Tide a four-point lead, then Spells, a 6-foot-2 junior, hit seven of eight free throws.

Ross and Stanley Meador each had 14 points for Galax, a four-point loser when the teams met in Floyd. The Scarlet Hurricane raised their record to 9-5 overall and 9-3 in the district.

Floyd, ranked seventh in Group A, fell to 12-2 and 10-2 and dropped into a tie with Grayson County, a 67-39 winner over Rocky Gap. Freddie Via led the Buffaloes with 20 points and Travis Crawford added 15. \

Fort Chiswell 60

MAX MEADOWS - Bland gave the Pioneers all they could handle, but Brian Lampkins' 3-point with 1:37 left gave Fort Chiswell the lead for good in the Mountain Empire District game.

Bland led 11-4 early, but Fort Chiswell (11-3, 9-3) put together a 19-4 run for a 23-15 lead in the second quarter. Undaunted, the Rockets (2-10, 2-9) came back and trailed 26-21 at the half, then rallied for a 50-45 lead with three minutes left in the game.

Fort Chiswell outscored Bland 10-4, capped by Lampkins' 3-pointer for a 55-54 lead. Chad Coley added a basket, Doug Mabry a pair of free throws and Lampkins another free throw for a 60-54 lead. Bland made it close at the end.

Lampkins finished with 21 points for the Pioneers, and Kevin King had a game-high 27 for Bland. \

Grayson County 67

Rocky Gap 39

INDEPENDENCE - The Blue Devils got a game-high 18 points from Devin Floyd and moved into a share of the Mountain Empire District lead with Floyd, which lost at Galax.

Wilbert Campbell had 10 points for Grayson (11-4, 10-2). Kyle Gibson had 11 points to lead Rocky Gap (6-7, 5-7). \

HOT SPRINGS - Bath County failed to make a field goal for the first 10:30 of the game, but still pulled out an ugly Pioneer District win over the Rebels.

The Chargers shot 18 percent (5-of-33) in the first half, but still held a 17-14 lead over Rockbridge, which shot 21 percent (5-of-21).

Todd Jenkins scored 19 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as Bath (11-4, 10-3) pulled away. Matt Sherrard added 13 for the Chargers, who made 18 of 23 free throws, including eight of 10 in the last 54 seconds.

Michael Chambers and William Sensabaugh scored 11 points each for the Rebels (3-12, 2-11). \

Covington 81

Lexington 48

COVINGTON - The Cougars scored the first 15 points and limited the Scarlet Hurricane to two free throws in the third quarter to win their ninth consecutive game and post a Pioneer District victory.

Leading 26-24 at the half, Covington (11-3, 9-3) ran away in the second half by outscoring Lexington 55-24. The Cougars shot 72 percent (22-of-32) in the second half and 62 percent (34-of-55) for the game.

Lexington (7-7, 5-7) was 0-of-8 from the field in the third quarter and committed 10 turnovers.

Tony Jeter paced Covington with 18 points. Ramon Sampson scored 15 and Van Wallace 14. Scott Reynolds and Martin Mayercheck each scored 15 for Lexington. Mayercheck made the free throws in the third quarter. \

Martinsville 51

Fieldale-Coll. 50

MARTINSVILLE - Lamont Martin scored a basket with four seconds left as the Bulldogs (10-2, 9-2) survived a stiff challenge by the Cavaliers (8-6, 6-6) in Piedmont District action.

Martinsville, trailing 50-49 with 20 seconds left, called a timeout and set up a play to go inside to the 6-foot-3 center, who laid the ball in for his only two points.

Michael Frasier led Martinsville with 15 points. Scott Chitwood paced Fieldale-Collinsville with 16. \

Patrick County 57

The Cougars pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bengals 23-14, and held on for their second win of the season in the Piedmont District clash.

Chris Reynolds led the way with 17 points for Patrick County (2-15, 2-13), and Chad Joyce added 16. Dytanyon Norman had a game-high 26 for Bassett (8-6, 7-5). \

Magna Vista 96

RIDGEWAY - Sophomore Evan Penn celebrated his promotion from the junior varsity by scoring a team-high 18 points as the Warriors improved their record to 11-3, 9-3 in the Piedmont District.

Rodney Redd added 17 points for Magna Vista, which had six scorers in double figures. Sonny Motley of Dan River (4-11, 2-10) had 24 points to lead all scorers.

Magna Vista, which scored 56 points in the second half, made 23 of 25 free throws. \

Gretna 68

CHATHAM - Roddy Locust scored a game-high 23 points and Gretna got past Chatham in a Piedmont District game.

Eric Waller and Rodney Irvin added 14 each for the Hawks (5-10, 3-9).

Chris Turner and Ben Wright scored 14 points each for the Cavaliers (1-13, 1-11). Tim White finished with 12 and Dave Motley 11. \

MARION - The Scarlet Hurricane emerged from a bad first quarter and rolled to a Highlands District victory at home.

Eddie Boothe scored 29 points and had eight rebounds, and Eric Hungate added 20 points and seven assists. Guard Brian Cregger had 12 assists for Marion (14-2, 6-0).

Tyrone Brown had half of the points for Abingdon (1-14, 0-6). \

Chilhowie 70

Rural Retreat 63

CHILHOWIE - Eric Sheets made five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to guide the Warriors to a Hogoheegee District win.

Patrick Brooks added 18 and Chris French finished with 10 for Chilhowie (5-7, 4-3).

Thomas Taylor scored 12 points and Michael Houseman 10 for the Indians (1-13, 0-11). \

George Wythe 64

PH-Glade Spring 51

WYTHEVILLE - Sie Dickerson scored 20 points and Tracy Brown added 19, including three 3-point goals, to lead the Maroons to a Hogoheegee District victory.

The visitors from Glade Spring (3-11, 2-8) were led by Lee Wright's 14 points, and were in the game until Wythe (11-6, 9-2) pulled away in the fourth quarter. \
