SUPPORT OF SCHOOLING LIFTS TEACHERS' SPIRITS
ON BEHALF of the Roanoke County Education Association, I commend your Jan. 19 editorial, "Raise and reform the sales tax."You are absolutely correct that it is "not enough to wait for revenue miracles." Even if the economy began a recovery today, Virginia would still suffer from the cutbacks in defense spending that fueled so much of the phenomenal growth in Northern Virginia and Tidewater in the 1980s.
If Virginians truly care about the future of their children and of the commonwealth, major adjustments must be made; and they must be made by all Virginians, not just the state employees and teachers who have borne the brunt of the economic shortfall to date.
We will be visiting our legislators in Richmond very soon, and I plan to take copies of your editorial to share with them. It has certainly buoyed our lagging spirits to see you show your support of education in this manner. KITTY J. BOITNOTT ROANOKE COUNTY
