CITADEL TOPPLES KEYDETS
The Citadel's Lamar Wright, a 46 percent free-throw shooter, made two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to ice a 66-60 Southern Conference basketball victory over VMI on Saturday.Wright had put The Citadel up 60-58 with a short bank shot with about a minute remaining, and Jonathan Penn, the Keydets' best free-throw shooter at better than 80 percent coming into the game, missed both ends of a two-shot foul.
The teams exchanged baskets, leaving VMI (7-10 overall, 2-4 Southern Conference) behind by two with 34 seconds remaining when Wright was fouled. The Citadel (7-10, 2-4) added another basket on a late tip-in for the final margin.
"We did a great job in the second half, especially getting the ball to [Lewis ] Preston and Penn," VMI coach Joe Cantafio said. "But we let it get away from us in the first half. We didn't take great shots and I don't think we came out sharp." The Citadel broke a four-game conference losing streak. VMI has lost three straight in the conference.
The Citadel tied it at 58 and VMI missed a chance to retake the lead when Penn missed a jumper. Preston blocked a shot and VMI got the ball back, only to miss two open 3-point attempts, which Cantafio said was the key point of the game.
Penn led VMI with 21 points, and Preston added 17. Andre Harris paced The Citadel with 18.
