LYNCHBURG MAYOR WON'T RUN AGAIN
M.W. Thornhill, the city's first black mayor and a member of the City Council for the past 16 years, has announced he will not seek re-election."After careful consideration, I have reached the conclusion that I should give someone else the opportunity to serve the city. Therefore . . . I will not be a candidate for re-election to the City Council this spring," Thornhill said.
The 70-year-old mayor said he was not resigning for health reason or because of threats he and his family have received.
"I've always been a fighter. I fear no man," he said. Thornhill declined to discuss the nature of the threats. - Associated Press
