LIBERTY, ETSU TOP VMI WINTER RELAYS

Liberty University and East Tennessee State University each won three events in the 41st annual VMI Winter Relays track and field meet on Saturday in the Cormack Field House.

East Tennessee State was led by Seamus Power, who was voted the meet's outstanding performer. Power won the mile run and anchored ETSU's winning distance-medley relay team.

Liberty's Gerald Mosley was a double winner in the 200- and 400-meter races, and Terry Burwell won the 3,000-meter run for the Flames.

William and Mary's Ryan Harris was voted the outstanding field performer, winning the triple jump and taking fourth in the long jump.

VMI's only winner was Frank Beohling, who took first in the shot put and second in the hammer.

John White, the head coach of track and field and cross country at Hampton University, was honored as this year's recipient of the Walt Cormack Award, presented annually to a collegiate coach in recognition of outstanding service to the sport.

For three of the past four years, White's Pirates have won the Colonial Intercollegiate Athletic Association cross country title. Hampton finished sixth and third the past two years in the NCAA Division II men's indoor track championships, and third both years in the outdoor meet. - Staff report
