DIOCESE MULLS SPENDING CUTS AT MEETINGS
Delegates to the 73rd Annual Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia will make final decisions today on how to fund its programs for the year with about $50,000 less than in 1991.
A $743,000 budget was presented by the diocesan Executive Board and debated Saturday, with the bulk of the cuts coming from elimination of the campus ministry programs at Virginia Tech and Radford University.
The program has been unfunded since the end of December. The finance committee will consider whether to endorse all amendments recommended Saturday and each will be voted on today.
Council members also discussed a group of resolutions, including one that would "proclaim our inability to call same-sex sexual preference a sin" and another that would request that the national church "prohibit the ordination of persons who practice, believe, or teach that sexual relationships outside the bonds of Holy Matrimony are acceptable."
Votes on resolutions also will be made at the closing session of the council today.
