Barbara Walters and Sen. John Warner have been chums for eons, but the Washington Post detects a ripple of change - that they've "crossed the line into `serious.' "

The senator, an Elizabeth Taylor marriage vet, will say only that the two have "a marvelous relationship." The TV personality, in a February Vogue article, swears off marriage.

Adds a Warner friend: "They have been waxing and waning for years. Let's just say they are now waxing."

Actress Whoopi Goldberg will preside over a Grammy Awards ceremony this month in New York that will include performances by Natalie Cole, Bonnie Raitt and the Irish soul group The Commitments.

Goldberg's role as host this year was announced by Michael Green, president of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

Handing out Grammys at the Feb. 25 show will be David Crosby, Kenny Loggins, Henry Mancini, Kenny Rogers, Little Steven Van Zandt, Ringo Starr and others.

Also scheduled to perform at the show at New York City's Radio City Music Hall are Amy Grant, Color Me Badd, Mariah Carey, Vince Gill, LL Cool J, Johnny Mathis and Metallica.

The three-hour program will be broadcast on CBS.

Actress Melanie Griffith says she's surprised she won the role as a World War II spy in the film "Shining Through."

"I figured a big star like Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda or maybe Michelle Pfeiffer would get first crack," Griffith told The (Nashville) Tennessean in an interview published Sunday.

In the movie, Griffith plays a secretary who infiltrates Nazi Germany to find the secret of the V-2 rocket.

"I wanted the `Shining Through' part the minute I read it because it would be my first shot at a bigger-than-life, old-fashioned hero," she said. "Even men don't get great roles like that anymore."

Griffith and actor-husband Don Johnson, will join President Bush's daughter Dorothy LeBlond on the U.S. delegation at the opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, the White House said Monday.

Vice President Dan Quayle and his wife Marilyn are also planning to attend Saturday's opening ceremonies.
