3-YEAR-OLD BOY DIES IN HANDGUN ACCIDENT

A 3-year-old boy who shot himself in the face with his mother's handgun has died, authorities said.

Rico D. Cross died about 10:05 p.m. Sunday at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

Myrtle Cross found the boy lying on the floor of their apartment shortly after noon Sunday. A neighbor told police Cross had been outside tending her laundry when the shooting occurred.

Police said the boy was alone in the apartment when he shot himself. Police spokesman Tim Davenport said investigators had determined the shooting was accidental.
