KENNY WALLACE NASCAR TEAM IN DISARRAY

Team III crew chief Barry Dodson said Tuesday that his crew still hopes to run a limited NASCAR Winston Cup schedule this year despite losing its sponsorship and driver Kenny Wallace over the weekend in the wake of questions about financial improprieties.

Royal Appliance Manufacturing Company of Cleveland withdrew its Dirt Devil sponsorship Saturday after a bankruptcy referee reported in Charlotte, N.C., that Team III owner Sam McMahon III's father had improperly diverted some $2.5 million to the team from a hotel company he owned that is in bankruptcy court.

Dirt Devil's withdrawal led to Wallace's resignation, Dodson said, because Wallace wants to be able to run a full season, which now is impossible.

Another NASCAR owner, Felix Sabates, is assuming control of Wallace's Grand National team from McMahon, and Wallace plans to defend his Busch Grand National title instead of running for Winston Cup rookie of the year, Team III spokeswoman Kathy Ebert said.

However, Dodson said McMahon intends to keep the Team III Winston Cup shop open. Dodson said the team won't have a car for the Feb. 16 Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Fla., because "we're out of time."

As for the rest of the year, "we have to sit down and look in our piggy bank and look at some particular drivers for particular race tracks," Dodson said.
