AUDIT BEGINS IN EMBEZZLING BY SHERIFF

State officials have begun auditing city offices in the first step of trying to recover money allegedly embezzled by Sheriff Marshall Honaker.

City Manager Paul Spangler said it may be months before federal officials return records the city needs to determine what, if any, money it is due. After an audit of Sheriff's Department records is complete, city officials will determine from whom they must recover funds and who may pursue legal action, Spangler said.

Honaker was the subject of an FBI and Internal Revenue Service probe into allegations he diverted nearly $377,700 in public funds to a private checking account.

Honaker committed suicide in his office on Jan. 22. He was never charged with a crime. - Associated Press
