HOKIES LAND 8TH TOP 25 SELECTION

Defensive back Antonio Banks from Warwick High School in Hampton became the eighth member of the Roanoke Times & World-News Top 25 to commit to Virginia Tech before mailing a letter-of-intent to the Hokies on Wednesday.

There has been no change in status for any of the 21 football players who have committed to Tech, and all are expected to sign by today.

The same applies to the 25 players who have committed to Virginia. The Cavaliers signed nine players on the Top 25.

Anthony Smith, a defensive back from Green Run High in Hampton, became the last Top 25 to make his decision known when it was announced he would sign with Hampton University.

Smith also took a recruiting visit to UCLA, which wanted him only as a fullback. Smith wants to play strong safety, Green Run coach Cadillac Harris said.

Banks, who underwent reconstructive knee surgery in November, picked Tech over Clemson and Maryland. He is awaiting scores from the Scholastic Aptitude Test in January.

In other recruiting Wednesday:

VMI announced 17 signees, five from Virginia, including quarterback Jason Ross and lineman Jon Sherrod from Patrick Henry High in Ashland. Keydets recruit Greg Harris, a tight end from Tabb High, was rated one of the top 100 prospects in Virginia by the Roanoke Times & World-News.

Steve Jackson from Jefferson Forest is one of eight in-state recruits among James Madison's 18 signees. Jackson is projected as a linebacker by the Dukes, who signed four players off the Second 25.
