RECYCLING TRAILER GETS 1ST COMPLAINT
It will be another month before the Blacksburg Planning Commission decides what to do with the recycling trailer at 702 University City Boulevard. The only speaker at a public hearing Tuesday night was the first person to complain about the Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Co. trailer in the parking lot of the Capri Twin Theatre.
"We support the recycling effort," said Roger Callahan, district manager for Blockbuster Video. "But the placement of the trailer blocks the view of our store."
Callahan's complaint came just after Planning Commission Chairman G. William Claus received assurances from the planning staff that no one had complained about the trailer.
Callahan asked that the trailer be moved back five to 10 feet to allow a better view of the video store.
After talking with the planning staff, the commission decided to postpone a decision until its March meeting. Meanwhile, the planners have been instructed to work with property owners to find the best location for the trailer.
The trailer has been at the site for about two years. Bill Walker, its operator, was the first person to request a special-use permit for a recycling drop-off spot under the town ordinance that took effect in October.
The request has sailed through two committees without opposition. And the Board of Zoning Appeals had approved use of a 16-square-foot sign - standard on trailers - but with just six square feet of information to conform to town regulations.
