N.Y. PROFESSOR TO TALK ON WOMEN AS LAWYERS
Cynthia Fuchs Epstein, distinguished professor of sociology at the City University of New York, will speak on "The Politics of Difference: Women as Lawyers, Victims and Clients," Monday at 4 p.m. in the Brush Mountain Room of Virginia Tech's Squires Student Center.
Her lecture will examine the cultural belief that women have different ways of thinking and behaving, creating social policies that affect their ability to be treated equally with men in both attorney and client roles.
Epstein has been a consultant to the White House and the National Academy of Sciences, is past president of the Eastern Sociological Society and has been on the council of the American Sociological Association. Her latest research examines how work-place culture and community affects the meaning of work for both sexes.
Her most recent book is "Deceptive Distinctions: Sex, Gender and the Social Order." A previous book, "Women in Law" won the American Bar Association's Merit Award.
The lecture, sponsored by the Mu chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, is free. A reception will follow.
