SALTVILLE MAN FACES RIFLE-SLAYING CHARGE

A Saltville man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a Chilhowie man Wednesday afternoon.

Smyth County Sheriff's deputies found Freddie Lee Jones lying on Virginia 645 near Seven Mile Ford with a gunshot wound to the head, a Sheriff's Department news release said. He died on the way to Smyth County Community Hospital.

A deputy later stopped Larry Allen Worley on Virginia 107 near Chilhowie for driving erratically. Authorities had been looking for a car similar to Worley's seen near where Jones was found.

Worley, 43, was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He was being held in Smyth County jail on $100,000 bond awaiting a preliminary hearing April 9, the release said.
