Knights of Columbus contest winners named

The Knights of Columbus Council 562 has announced winners of its recent free throw/foul shooting competition, who will advance to regional competition.

In boys' competition, winners were Alan Dalton, 10; Michael Yates, 11; Ronnie Kasey, 12; Brian Carson, 13; and Kintay Daniels, 14.

In girls' competition, winners were Joanna Colosimo, 10; Samantha Webb, 11; Rita Devlin, 12; and Katie Tricarico 13.

\ Roanoke Academy qualifies 8 for state

Eight members of the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics team qualified for the Virginia State Championships as a result of their performance at the Virginia Sectional Championship held recently in Martinsville.

Maureen Jekielek qualified at level 7.

Those who qualified at level 8 were Erin Lester, Emily Winett and Jennifer Pelton.

Qualifying at level 9 were Kelli Newcomb, Dawn Turpin, April Southern and Lori O'Dell.

Roanoke Academy's results from the Martinsville meet were as follows:

Level 7 - Maureen Jekielek, first on bars (8.20); second on beam, floor exercise and all around.

Level 8 (12-14 age group) - Erin Lester, first all around (33.75); first on beam (8.75); second on floor, vault and bars.

Level 8 (15 and older group) - Emily Winett, first on beam (8.70); third all around; fifth on floor, vault and bars; Jennifer Pelton, fourth on beam.

Level 9 - Kelli Newcomb, second on beam and floor, third all around, fourth on vault and sixth on bars; April Southern, first on beam (9.1); Dawn Turpin, sixth on floor.
