REAGAN, BUSH FORSOOK THE HELM
BY ALL ACCOUNTS, it has been this administration crying that all is well, with the president himself the last to acknowledge the contrary. Would you want this mistake for another four years? The Reagan-Bush administrations have left the helm of leadership unattended, to the detriment of America. Not only the economy and jobs, but the very good will of a so-called free people one to another, not unlike the pitfalls we urge the former Soviet nations to avoid.
Count me among those who then and now disagree with the war in the Gulf. Containment, yes; but for an intimidated ambassador, overstocked weapons and the Soviets' promise to look away, Bush would have done well to get containment.
Worse still is the seemingly deaf ear to the blatant hate and divisiveness spewing out of rabble-rousers for no other reason than disruption and confusion of the nation they claim to love. This is a genuine tragedy that assures no one of a better America. EMORY A. BURKS ROANOKE
