ASCS GRAIN PROGRAM SIGNUPS START MONDAY
Signups for the 1992 wheat and feed grain programs offered through the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service begin Monday. Registration will continue through April 17."To qualify for price support loans and deficiency payments, producers must reduce their acreage bases by at least 5 percent for wheat, corn, barley and sorghum," said W. Terry Altizer, county ASCS official. He noted there is no acreage reduction for oats.
The 1992 target prices are $4 per bushel for wheat, $2.75 for corn, $2.61 for barley and $1.45 for oats. "Target prices protect farmers' income if market prices fall below these levels," Altizer said. He said farmers also need money to operate their businesses, and may obtain financing while waiting for a better market through participation in the price-support loan program.
Details of the farm programs are available through the Montgomery County ASCS office at 7 N. Franklin St. For more information, call the office weekdays, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at 382-3961.
