FRANCES LEWIS, HISTORIAN, DIES AT 85

Frances McNulty Lewis, a former Roanoke historical writer and teacher, died Thursday at her home in South Roanoke. She was 85.

A native of Lexington, she was the first person born in the Stonewall Jackson House after it was converted to a hospital.

She was a graduate of Hollins College and held a master's degree from Columbia University. She taught at Hollins, the former Lee Junior High School in Roanoke and Garrison Forest School in Baltimore.

She was a reporter for the former Roanoke World-News in the 1930s. She served on the boards of Roanoke Valley Historical Society, Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation, Greenvale Nursery, Roanoke Symphony Auxiliary and the Hollins Alumnae Association, and in the vestry at St. John's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Anna Lawson of Daleville; two sons, Joseph D. Logan III of Daleville and George Logan of Salem; two sisters, Anne Stone of Roanoke and Mary Louise Hoge of Lynchburg; and two brothers, Charles McNulty of Roanoke and William A. McNulty of Beaufort, S.C.

The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
