GRAYSON COUNTY WINS, STAYS TIED FOR 1ST PLACE

Grayson County's Wilbert Campbell sank a layup with nine seconds left to lock up a 79-76 Mountain Empire District boys' basketball victory over Auburn on Friday night.

The Blue Devils (13-4 overall, 12-2 Mountain Empire), who remained tied for first with Floyd County, trailed until a basket by Devin Floyd put them up 60-59. Grayson stretched the lead to seven until an Auburn rally cut it to 77-76 with 20 seconds remaining.

Bonner Satterwhite led five Grayson County players in double figures with 23 points. Brian Sale scored 25 to pace Auburn (10-6, 9-5). \

Floyd County 78

Bland 49

FLOYD - The Buffaloes had an easy time with Bland and remained deadlocked with Grayson County for first place in the Mountain Empire District.

Floyd led 21-6 after the first quarter and 41-19 at the half in raising its record to 14-2, 12-2 in the district. Bland fell to 2-14, 2-12 despite a game-high 22 points from Toby Dotson.

John Hawley had 19 points to lead 13 Floyd scorers. \

Fort Chiswell 88

MAX MEADOWS - Brian Lampkins threw in 28 points as Fort Chiswell dominated the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District game.

Doug Mabry added 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Pioneers (13-3, 11-3). B.W. Hill finished with 13 points and Chad Coley 12.

Narrows (6-8, 6-8) got 16 points for McCreery Mann and 11 from Scott Dalton. \

Shawsville 49

Giles 47

SHAWSVILLE - Jason Spangler sank two free throws in the closing second to give the Shawnees the victory over the Spartans in a Mountain Empire District game.

The triumph was the first in district play for Shawsville (2-13, 1-13). Giles is 1-13, 1-13.

Kenny Dow scored 24 points to spark the Shawnees. Mitch Reed had 10 for Giles. \

Jefferson Forest 64

Liberty 40

FOREST - In a Bedford County battle, the Cavaliers romped past visiting Liberty for a Seminole District victory.

Jefferson Forest (10-6, 10-6) doubled the score on the Minutemen (6-10, 6-10) by halftime and coasted. Keith Enslow led the Cavaliers with 13 points, and Ryan Gilleland and Bryan Jennings scored 12 each.

Liberty's only double-figure scorer was Patrick Patterson, with 12 points.

LYNCHBURG - The Bees took a Seminole District decision to avoid an upset, but not without some fourth-quarter excitement created by Staunton River's comeback from a 10-point deficit.

Brookville was ahead comfortably in the fourth quarter when the Golden Eagles (8-7, 8-7) rallied. Mike Harris' 15 points, including three 3-point goals, paced Staunton River. Eric Flood and Mike Moon added 12 apiece.

Greg Coffee topped the Bees (13-3, 13-3) with 18 points and six rebounds.

Christiansburg 48

HILLSVILLE - Jermaine Hash rebounded a missed free throw and scored with 1:30 remaining to break a 48-48 tie and the Cavaliers held off upset-minded Christiansburg.

The Demons (5-12, 1-3) trailed by 11 points in the third quarter, but came back to take the lead 44-43 in the fourth on a jumper by Mike Smith, who finished with a team-high 15 points.

The lead exchanged hands three more times before Hash put the Cavaliers (11-7, 2-2) ahead for good. Jason Stockner, who led Carroll County with 15 points, added a free throw for the final margin.

Hash finished with 12 points and Ben Sumner added 11 for the Cavaliers. Eddie Bentley had 14 for Christiansburg. \

Franklin County 73

Heritage 65

LYNCHBURG - Franklin County took over the boards and went on a 15-5 run in the fourth quarter to hand Heritage its 10th straight loss in a non-district game.

It was a one-point game before the Eagles (3-13) staged their late surge. Heritage is 6-12.

Derrek Bryant scored 16 points and Chris Mattox 13 to pace the Eagles. The Pioneers got 20 points from Mike Preston. \

Gateway Christian 75

Temple Christian 32

ABINGDON - Steve Mannon scored 14 as the Crusaders cruised past Temple Christian in the Old Dominion Association of Church Schools game.

Kevin Lucas added 11 for the Crusaders (13-5, 5-0), who have clinched the No. 1 seed for the tournament in two weeks. They were missing their only senior, Timmy Henderson, who didn't play because of a sprained right ankle and knee.

Kelly Gobble led Temple with 15. \
