ROANOKE COUNTY MAN DIES AFTER CRASH

An 18-year-old Roanoke County man died Thursday after a car in which he was riding struck a metal utility pole in Salem.

David Arthur Gardner of Londonderry Court was dead on arrival after being flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital by Life-Guard 10.

Sgt. Mike Fisher said Gardner was riding in a car driven by William E. Phillips, 20, of Woods Avenue in Roanoke. Phillips was treated at Lewis-Gale Hospital and released, a spokeswoman said.

Fisher said Phillips' car was traveling west on East Main Street about 10:30 p.m. when it went into the right-hand lane, passed a car, swerved back into the left lane and went out of control.
