VA'S POLICE CHIEF UNDER INVESTIGATION

The chief of police of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem is under investigation and is on sick leave, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed Friday.

Police Chief Eugene Meador, who directs a small force of officers at the medical facility, denied any knowledge of an investigation when contacted at his home Friday.

"I'm on sick leave. That's all I can tell you. That's all I know," Meador said. He said he was suffering from acute depression.

Pat Clark, public relations officer for the hospital, said that she could confirm only that the chief was being investigated for something and that he had been placed on sick leave.
