CITY BENEFACTOR MARTIN PATSEL DIES

Roanoke businessman Martin "Jake" Patsel Jr., who recently donated $200,000 to the Foundation for Roanoke Valley, died Friday morning. He was 59.

Patsel, president of Roanoke Distributing Co., gave the money to the foundation in December 1991. It is the largest individual donation given to the organization, which has a goal of raising $5 million by 1995, said executive director Alan Ronk.

"It was a wonderful gift for us to get," Ronk said. "I was sorry to hear about his passing."

Patsel, a father of two and a veteran of the Korean War, also served on the board of directors of NationsBank.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Fair View Cemetery. Oakey's Roanoke Chapel is handling the arrangements.
