NEW RECORDINGS
RockPrimal Scream opens its latest effort with the catchy, celebrational "Movin' on up," which sounds akin to late '60s Rolling Stones efforts like "You Can't Always Get What You Want" or "Sympathy for the Devil." Scratchy percussion, piano comping and a slide guitar are high in the mix, snaking around a memorable chorus delivered by gospel-sounding singers.
The track has received local airplay and could be a trick from the new British band. It sounds nothing like the rest of "Screamadelica" (Sire), with the exception of "Come Together" and the instrumental "Loaded."
The bulk of "Screamadelica" is experimental and just downright weird. A ready-made dance floor beat accompanies most tracks with beeps, clicks and Space Age noise rising out of synthesizers. And the vocals on tracks like "Inner Flight" are so mournful and dreary they're hardly tolerable.
So if you're looking for more of the delightful "Movin' On Up," look somewhere else.
