WATKINS, PETER H.

Peter H. Watkins, age 72, of Murray Hill, N.J. died Saturday, February 8, 1992, in the Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. He was born in Deal, Kent, England, grew up in Bisbee, Arizona, then lived in Blacksburg, Va. and Baton Rouge, La. before moving to Murray Hill, N.J. 27 years ago. He was a graduate of the University of Arizona-Tucson with a B.S. in Chemistry. He was also a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he received a B.S. in Engineering, a Master of Science and Ph.D. He was employed by Exxon Research & Engineering Corp., first in Baton Rouge, La. as a chemical engineer, and then Florham Park where he retired in 1982 as Coordinator of Professional Employment Technical Information. Previously he was a professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he taught chemical engineering. He served in the Army during World War II and worked on the Manhatten Project for two years in Los Alamos, N.M. He was a member of the Exxon Retired Employees Association, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Engineering Chemical Society, usher and member of the administrative board of the United Methodist Church in Summit, and the Summit Old Guard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Carty Watkins, in August, 1991. Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday from the Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg by the Rev. Richard H. Horne. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Wednesday morning. Arrangements by Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg.
