2ND-QUARTER RUN PROPELS ALLEGHANY PAST BYRD

Alleghany used a big second quarter to run away from William Byrd for a 67-50 Blue Ridge District boys' basketball victory Friday night.

Alleghany (10-6 overall, 2-3 Blue Ridge) outscored the Terriers 25-11 in the second quarter to build the 17-point bulge that remained at the game's end.

The Mountaineers had four double-figure scorers, led by Michael Hunter with 21 points.

Byrd (8-8, 1-4) had 11 players score, but only David Robinson, with 17 points, had more than six. \

North Cross 75

Timberlake Christian 46

The Raiders took a 24-6 lead and sailed to a Virginia Independent Conference yawner over the Tornadoes.

Marcus Cardwell scored 11 points and Jesse Webster 10 to lead 12 scoring North Cross players. The Raiders improved to 10-11, 7-4 in the VIC.

Matt Anderson led Timberlake with 10 points. \

RV Christian 72

Carlisle 53

Sam Donnelly and Brad Suhr scored eight points apiece in a 23-13 third-quarter burst that lifted the Eagles (9-9, 7-5) to the Virginia Independent Conference victory over Carlisle (3-14, 2-8).

Donnelly finished with a game-high 22 points and Suhr had 10. Jason DeLong added 16.

Trent Bowles scored 15 points and Donnie Pennington 12 for Carlisle. \

NATURAL BRIDGE - Sophomore Marty Early scored 11 of his team-high 28 points in the final quarter as Natural Bridge rallied from a third-quarter deficit in Pioneer District play.

Natural Bridge (7-9, 7-7) trailed 46-44 before scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter. Early was supported by Joey Carter, who had 17 points, and Jason Loughhead, who scored 10.

Craig County (2-14, 2-12) was led by David McPherson, who scored a game-high 37 points, including 11 of the team's 12 points in the fourth quarter. \

LYNCHBURG - Gabe Lyons scored 19 points to lead the Bulldogs to the Virginia Independent Conference triumph over the Celtics.

Jason Griemel had 12 for Roanoke Catholic (9-9, 5-7). \

Jenny DeSaegher scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs edged Roanoke Catholic in a Blue Ridge Conference game at Liberty University.

Shannon Simpson scored 15 and Christy Monsour 12 for the Celtics (12-3 overall, 8-3 Blue Ridge). \

Elisha Jones scored 25 points and the Patriots had no trouble with Roanoke Valley Christian in a non-district game.

Ashaki Johnson added 12 points for Patrick Henry (8-8), which grabbed a 17-8 first-quarter lead.

Danae Wegner led the Eagles (12-6) with 18 points. \
