WHITE HOUSE'S ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY IS NOW ON DISPLAY
An exhibition to celebrate the White House is housed in another historic building that was itself once a president's home. The Octagon Museum is the location of "The White House: Image in Architecture, 1792-1992," an exhibition that coincides with the bicentennial of the laying of the White House cornerstone.
The Octagon is a well-preserved example of architecture in the Federal style that served as President James Madison's house during the war of 1812. Now, a collection of more than 120 paintings, drawings, decorative objects, prints, photographs and written documents relating to the White House are on display in the museum.
The American Architectural Foundation, joint sponsor of the show with the White House Historical Association, says this is the first exhibition to explore the White House's architectural history. It will concentrate on the White House's early construction, focusing on the exterior and interior architecture, and will be on view through April 12.
