ROANOKE WINS 81-74
Kevin Martin scored 25 points and Rick Becker added 24 Saturday as Roanoke defeated Hampden-Sydney 81-74 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.Roanoke (12-9 overall, 9-5 ODAC) trailed 43-37 at the half, but rallied behind strong rebounding and clutch free-throw shooting.
The Maroons out-rebounded Hampden-Sydney (16-5, 10-4) 24-18 in the second half. Roanoke led 74-72 with 22 seconds remaining before going on a 7-2 run to end the game. All seven points came on free throws.
Dustin Fonder was 4-for-4, Hillary Scott 5-for-6, Martin 5-for-5 and Becker 6-for-8 at the line for the Maroons.
Mike Murphy helped out with team-highs of 10 rebounds and four assists.
Russell Turner led Hampden-Sydney with 17 points before fouling out with 3:15 remaining. Michael Wilson had 16 points and Everett Joyner 11.
The Tigers turned the ball over only four times, but shot 35 percent (27-76) from the field. \
