PARTNERSHIP CONFERENCE SET FEB. 14
An all-day conference on business-education partnerships will be held at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 14 at Wytheville Community College.
It is one of a series of conferences sponsored by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, on aspects of economic development.
Boucher said the conference will highlight some outstanding educational partnerships that could serve as models for other localities.
"These joint efforts are enriching classroom instruction and giving industry a meaningful role in the preparation of tomorrow's workers," he said.
Joseph Spagnolo Jr., state superintendent of public instruction, will discuss state efforts to promote educational partnerships.
Linda Lastinger will discuss the progress of the Galax Foundation for Excellence, which has developed a scholarship program for high school graduates.
Hilda Legg, alternate federal co-chairman of the Appalachian Regional Commission, will provide information about federal resources available to educational partnerships.
The program is scheduled to run until 3:45 p.m. It is being presented in cooperation with Forward Southwest Virginia, the Virginia Office of Volunteerism, the Virginia Department of Education, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Assistance Center at Virginia Tech.
The conference is free, but there will be an $8 charge for those having lunch. More information and reservations are available from Donna Stanley at Boucher's Abingdon office (telephone 628-1145).
