NEWSPAPER STAFFERS HONORED AWARDS
Five Roanoke Times & World-News staff members were honored Saturday with first-place awards at the annual Virginia Press Association banquet.Newspaper staffers captured an additional seven category awards for second- or third-place finishes for their work between September 1990 and August 1991.
New River Valley Bureau photographer Gene Dalton snapped what was judged to be the best spot news photo of the year: a plane's crash landing on Interstate 81 in May.
Medical writer Charles Hite and staff photographer Don Petersen won a first-place award in the combination pictures and stories category for their June package on the pediatric intensive-care unit at Community Hospital. Petersen also won a first-place award in the feature photo category.
The RT&WN's other first-place award came in the sports feature-writing category for Dwayne Yancey's October 1990 story on the first organized football game ever played in Highland County.
Other staff winners were: Keith Graham (second, feature photo, and third, picture story or essay); Kevin Kreneck (second, art/illustrations); Alan Sorensen (third, editorial writing); Tim Van Riper (third, design of lifestyle/entertainment pages); and Graham, Van Riper, Marty Horne, Andrew Svec and Robert Lunsford (third, special section design).
Winners in the Virginia News Photographers Association contest also were announced Saturday. RT&WN staff photographer Cindy Pinkston got a second place in the feature photo category.
