George Washington of Danville put Cave Spring down early and held on to hand the Knights their first girls' basketball loss 56-49 Saturday.GW-Danville (10-3), leading the Western District, exploded to a 23-8 first-quarter lead with an almost flawless transition game. Cave Spring (16-1), the Roanoke Valley District's No. 1 team, made two of 10 field-goal attempts in the quarter and the missed shots often resulted in a quick outlet passes by the Eagles for easy layups.
Cave Spring picked up its defensive intensity in the final three quarters, but the closest it got was four points.
Kim Stewart led the Knights, who had defeated GW-Danville 77-51 in Roanoke, with 13 points and Lisa Hodges had 10.
Dionne Smith had a game-high 22 for GW, and Katrina King added 14. -
