PATRICK HENRY PLAYING FOR DISTRICT TITLE TONIGHT

Patrick Henry can wrap up the Roanoke Valley District boys' basketball title if the Patriots beat Pulaski County tonight in Dublin.

PH is 17-1 overall and 5-0 in the district. Second-place Pulaski County is 11-6, 3-2 and has won eight consecutive games.

PH coach Woody Deans says he expects the team's second-leading scorer and leading rebounder, 6-foot-7 Jonas Callis, to return tonight after a two-game absence because of chicken pox.

Three other Timesland teams can clinch ties for district titles. Northside (Blue Ridge), Laurel Park (Piedmont) and Covington (Pioneer) can all do that by winning if second-place teams in those districts - Lord Botetourt (Blue Ridge), Martinsville (Piedmont) and James River (Pioneer) - lose.

Blacksburg has already locked up at least a tie for the New River District title.

Teams that win regular-season titles are assured berths in the regional tournaments regardless of what happens in the district. In Group A and Group AA, regular-season winners go to the regional as the league's No. 1 team regardless of how they do in the district tournament.
