TOP-RANKED LAUREL PARK CRUISES 91-48

Odell Hodge and Ronnie Jackson combined for 22 points in the third quarter when Laurel Park turned a comfortable lead into a rout on its way to a 91-48 Piedmont District victory over Gretna.

Hodge had 13 of his 29 points, and Jackson 9 of his 14 in the third quarter when the Lancers, the No. 1 ranked team in Group AA, outscored the Hawks 29-10 to take a 27-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Lanzy Robertson scored 15 for Laurel Park (16-2, 15-0). Eric Waller led Gretna (6-12, 4-11) with 19 points. \

Martinsville 58

Chatham 54

MARTINSVILLE - Michael Frasier made two free throws with about 30 seconds remaining to preserve a Piedmont District victory for the Bulldogs.

Poor free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter by Martinsville (15-2, 13-2) allowed Chatham (1-16, 1-14) to pull to one point behind. The Bulldogs missed seven one-and-one free throw opportunities in the final eight minutes.

The Cavaliers trailed 56-54 when Frazier made the clinching free throws.

Lamont Martin led Martinsville with 16 points, and Maurice Spencer scored 12. Robbie Williams scored 15 for Chatham. \

Patrick County 51

STUART - A 13-4 run in the second quarter helped lift Patrick County to a Piedmont District victory.

Chris Reynolds scored 15 and Brendon Robertson 13 for the Cougars (4-13, 4-11).

Sonny Motley led the Wildcats (5-13, 4-11) with 10 points. \

Tunstall 72

Fieldale-Collinsville 61

DRY FORK - Sophomores Khris Law and Chris Walton collaborated for 40 points as the Trojans beat the Cavaliers in a Piedmont District game.

Law finished with 23 points and Walton 17 for Tunstall (9-8, 9-6), which built a 17-point lead midway in the third quarter and cruised. Tarrace Carter contributed 14 points for the winners.

Scott Chitwood led Fieldale-Collinsville (10-7, 8-7) with 21 points. \

Magna Vista 80

Bassett 64

BASSETT - Marcus Toney scored 27 points and Brian Taylor 19 as the Warriors overpowered the Bengals in a Piedmont District game.

Bassett (8-9, 7-8) led 19-17 after one quarter before Magna Vista (12-5, 10-5) took command behind Toney, the Warriors' quick-silver guard.

Keith Largin led the losers with 23 points.

Bland 57

INDEPENDENCE - The Blue Devils shot above 50 percent for the sixth time in seven games to rout Bland in a Mountain Empire District matchup.

Devin Floyd scored 22 points to lead Grayson County (14-4, 13-2), which made 32 of 57 shots and put the Rockets away with a 10-0 run to end the first half.

Bonner Satterwhite and Wilbert Campbell added 12 points each for the Blue Devils.

Bland, led by Toby Dotson's 14 points and Brad Harden's 12, never got closer than 13 in the second half. \

Northwood 84

Rural Retreat 54

SALTVILLE - The Panthers kept Rural Retreat winless in the district with a Hogoheegee rout.

Neal Booth scored 22 points, John Griffin 12, Scott Waddle 10 and Jason Clendenin 10 for Northwood (13-3, 11-2).

Jason Childers had 10 points for the Indians (1-16, 0-14). \

Chilhowie 60

CHILHOWIE - Chris Waddell's 17 points paced the Maroons to the Hogoheegee District win.

George Wythe (13-7, 10-3) led by only one point after three quarters, but took command in the final eight minutes as Chilhowie (6-9, 5-5) self-destructed, committing a slew of unforced turnovers.

Jeff Bourne contributed 14 points for the winners. Eric Sheets and Jason Fore paced the losers with 13 and 12 points, respectively. \

Covington 71

Natural Bridge 56

NATURAL BRIDGE - Covington outscored Natural Bridge 44-29 in the second half and clinched a tie for the Pioneer District regular-season championship with the victory.

The Cougars (14-3, 14-1) and Rockets (7-10, 7-8) were tied 27-27 at the half, and it was still only a five-point game at the third-quarter break.

Everett Hughes and Van Wallace each scored 17 points to lead Covington. Joey Carter had a game-high 19 for Natural Bridge. \

Lexington 97

Highland 72

MONTEREY - Five players scored in double figures for Lexington as the Scarlet Hurricane defeated Highland in a Pioneer District game.

Highland (3-13 overall, 3-12 Pioneer) got down by 19 points in the first half and never recovered. Chris Schill had 26 points in a losing effort.

Chris Hull led Lexington in scoring with 22 points and four 3-pointers.

Rockbridge 39

BUENA VISTA - Parry McCluer held the Rebels to six points in both the second and fourth quarters to earn a Pioneer District victory.

Leslie Baker scored 18 points and Chuck Baker 13 for the Fighting Blues (8-9, 7-8).

Andy Cline led Rockbridge (5-14, 4-13) with 12 points. \

Carlisle 71

Timberlake Christian 55

MARTINSVILLE - Trent Bowles scored 25 points to lead the Chiefs past Timberlake in a Virginia Independent Conference matchup.

Carlisle (4-14, 3-9), which built a 10-point hafltime lead, led by 22 points in the third quarter. Bowles who scored 19 second-half points, scored 12 in the period.

Timberlake (3-18, 0-12) closed to 58-50 in the fourth quarter as the Chiefs played most of their reserves. But when the starters went back in, that was all she wrote.

The Chiefs hit 11-of-14 free throw attemts in the final period to help put the game away.

Timberlake was led by Joe Blair and Travis Stickle with 11 points each and Marty Chandler added 10.

Lou Jones pumped in 16 for Carlisle. \
