CAVS GET BACK AT TERPS

Virginia avenged its lone loss of the women's basketball season when it defeated Maryland 75-74 Tuesday night before 14,500 at Cole Field House.

Top-ranked Maryland had a shot to win, but Jesse Hicks' baseline jumper rolled off the rim at the buzzer for the Terrapins (20-2 overall, 10-1 ACC).

Second-ranked Virginia (21-1, 11-1) got a game-high 24 points by 6-foot-5 junior Heather Burge and 20 points by Dawn Staley.

Dafne Lee led Maryland with 23 points, 15 in the second half. Malissa Boles added 20.

It appeared the crowd figure was a bit low because Maryland students were allowed in the game with their identification cards and many did not have seats. Either way, it was a record for an ACC women's game.

Sales to the public were cut off at 11 a.m., and scalpers were getting $25 for tickets outside the gate. The previous largest crowd for a women's game at Cole Field House was 3,414 in 1989.

The Cavaliers were coming off an 86-62 road victory over Georgia Tech that was witnessed by an Alexander Memorial Coliseum-record crowd of 6,745 - more than double the Georgia Tech previous record.

Maryland, a 67-65 winner over UVa when the teams met Jan. 15 at University Hall, hit eight of its first 11 shots Tuesday night and built a 24-17 lead with 11:02 remaining in the first half.

Maryland never led in the second half, but the Cavaliers were unable to put away the Terrapins. After Dena Evans blocked a 3-point shot by Mizrachi with 20 seconds left, Staley missed a one-and-one to give Maryland its final chance.
