MONEY, PAVING MATTERS HOLD COUNCIL'S ATTENTION
City Council is taking action to both spend and save money.
It has scheduled budget study sessions Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m., and at 7 p.m. on the following dates: Feb. 25, March 2 and March 3.
At Monday night's meeting, members moved ahead on street paving projects, a regional jail study and a bond issue.
To save a few dollars on the paving, council removed Gibsondale Drive from a proposed project that included Fourth Street, Sheppard and Gandy streets. This reduced the contract to A&L Construction Inc. from $111,901 to $74,100.
In another money-saving effort, City Attorney John Spiers recommended refinancing $3.6 million in 1983 bonds, avoiding more than $200,000 in interest costs.
Council authorized the city manager to make the financial changes.
Members also appropriated $4,114 for Radford's share of a regional jail study assessment. The regional jail also would serve the counties of Floyd, Bland, Wythe and Pulaski.
A joint public hearing with the Planning Commission will be held Monday, Feb. 24 to amend the city's billboard standards. There has been a rush to obtain permits for large signs before the ordinance goes into effect. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
