FRANKLIN COUNTY'S UPSET BID FALLS SHORT
Matt Anderson's free throw with 30 seconds left Tuesday night lifted Cave Spring to a 73-71 Roanoke Valley District boys' basketball win over upset-minded Franklin County.Anderson's free throw gave Cave Spring (10-8, 2-4) a 72-71 lead. After the Eagles missed a shot to win the game, Kerry Whitt rebounded and made a free throw with two seconds left to provide the final margin.
Whitt's 22 points paced the Knights, who avenged a 75-66 setback earlier this season at Franklin County. Baker Doughty had 18 points, Chris Webster 11 and Dirk Hawks 11 for the winners.
Alesandra Lima had 21 points and Chris Mattox 17 for Franklin County (3-14, 1-4). \

SHAWSVILLE - Travis Crawford scored 25 points and Fred Via added 16 as the Buffaloes (15-2, 13-2) scored a methodical Mountain Empire District victory over the Shawnees (2-14, 1-14).
Crawford and Via each made three 3-pointers and helped get Floyd off to a quick start.
Kenny Dow led Shawsville with 24 points. \
Narrows 49
Rocky Gap 43 ROCKY GAP - Poor shooting finally caught up with the Eagles as the Green Wave pulled away for a Mountain Empire District victory.
Terry Mann, Brian Evans and Tinker Wills each had four points as Narrows (7-8, 7-8) outscored Rocky Gap 14-9 in the fourth quarter. Mann had 11 points for the Wave.
Clay Saunders scored 10 to pace Rocky Gap (7-9, 7-8). \
Galax 58

GALAX - Stanley Meador scored 17 points and played tough defense to propel the Maroon Tide to a Mountain Empire District win.
Meador held Auburn's Brian Sale, who averages more than 20 points per game, to seven points. Dirk Hill chipped in with 10 points for Galax (11-6, 11-4), which led by 15 at halftime.
Ponch Linkous topped Auburn in scoring with 14 points and Terry Millirons finished with 10. \
Fort Chiswell 88

PEARISBURG - Fort Chiswell shot 71 percent (17-for-24) from the free-throw line in defeating Giles (1-14 overall, 1-14 district) in a Mountain Empire District game.
The Pioneers took an early 25-8 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Brian Lampkins led Fort Chiswell in scoring with 23 points followed by Robbie Stoots with 19, including three 3-pointers. \
Tazewell 56

RADFORD - Chris Webb's three-point play started an 11-3 run in the final 1:30 as Tazewell posted a non-district victory over the Bobcats.
Radford (3-16) led 46-45 with 1:20 left but then missed a shot. Webb, who scored 21 points, made a layup and was fouled. He completed the three-point play to put Tazewell up 48-46. Tazewell was 7-for-7 on free throws in the closing minute to extend the lead.
Garrett Jones had 19 points for Radford, and Duane Pierson scored 16. \

ALTAVISTA - Sherman Pannell scored 16 points in the first half and 27 for the game to help lead Altavista to a Seminole District victory.
After playing the first quarter tight, the Colonels (17-0 overall, 17-0 district) surged in the second quarter behind Mark Johnson, who scored seven quick points and had 18 for the game.
Pannell hit four 3-pointers, three at the start of the third period, to tie his season high.
Eric Flood and Troy Hood led the Golden Eagles (8-7 overall, 8-7 district) in scoring with 16 and 11 points, respectively. \
Liberty 57
Rustburg 49
BEDFORD - The Minutemen outscored Rustburg 32-14 after halftime to rally for a Seminole District win.
Chris Dean finished with 15 points, Jerry Padgett 12 and Cory Anderson 10 for Liberty (7-11, 7-11), which trailed by 10 at halftime.
Mike Coward had six 3-pointers and 18 points, all in the first half, for the Devils (6-10, 6-10). Kevin Jones added 12. \

NARUNA - Anthony Poindexter's 13 points paced a balanced scoring attack as the Cavaliers rolled the Generals in a Seminole District contest.
Four players hit double figures for Jefferson Forest (11-6 overall and district), which never trailed after taking a five-point first-quarter lead. Phillip Lovelace had a career-high 34 points for William Campbell (1-16 overall and league). \

BALLARD, W.Va. - Gateway Christian built a 34-point halftime lead and the starting five watched the second half of the rout from the bench.
Thirteen players scored for Gateway (14-5), which led 31-12 after one quarter. David Arthur led the Crusaders with 17. Sam Moore added 13, Tom Brookman 12 and Tim Henderson 10.
Leslie Spencer scored 25 and Kenny Spencer 20 for Ballard (3-15). \

NEW CASTLE - Ryan Shotwell scored 19 points as the Knights took an early advantage and staved off the pesky Rockets in the Pioneer District game.
James River (12-5, 12-3) bolted to a 19-8 first-quarter lead and never trailed. Craig County (2-15, 2-13) closed the gap to two points with five minutes to play, but never got closer.
Guard David McPherson, the Pioneer's leading scorer, paced the Rockets with 29 points. Jody Stegar added 11 points for James River. \
