ESPN will broadcast major-league games on Monday nights from April through early August this season and eliminate its early Tuesday night game, the network said. The move, requested by the network and approved by teams in the past few weeks, means ESPN will be broadcasting five nights a week for most of the season. ESPN will televise a late game on Tuesdays, an early game on Wednesdays, a doubleheader on Fridays and an 8 p.m. game on Sundays.
"We'll face less local competition on Monday than Tuesday," said Loren Matthews, ESPN's senior vice president of programming. "They'll be less games; you could say we'll have less of a selection, but we're still sure there'll be a quality game out there for us each and every week."
\ Ron Fraser of Miami, college baseball's top winning active coach, said he will retire after coaching the U.S. Olympic team. Fraser, 55, will finish the current NCAA season, then lead the U.S. team at Barcelona. His 30th Miami team is off to a 3-0 start and is expected to be a national contender. Fraser's teams have made 11 trips to the College World Series and won national championships in 1982 and 1985. Fraser said he will honor the last three years on his contract as a university fund-raiser.
